A REVIEW AND COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF REFRESHABLE BRAILLE DISPLAYS

Abstract

The refreshable Braille devices stand at the frontier of digital accessibility for the blind and visually challenged, where both actuator hardware and software architecture jointly define their true performance, usability, and affordability. On the hardware front, this review dissects actuator mechanisms such as piezoelectric, electromagnetic, and shape memory alloys, by highlighting their operational principles, response characteristics, and lifecycle modelling. Six of the world-wide leading commercial devices (Orbit Reader 20, Braille Note Touch Plus, Braille Star 80, Dot Pad, Seika series, and Actilino 3.0) are benchmarked against key engineering metrics, with an emphasis on back-end control electronics such as MOSFET-driven switching networks. Complementing this hardware overview, the software component is also analysed through the lens of operating systems, accessibility APIs, Braille translation algorithms, and real-time dot rendering mechanism. A novel optimization method, Differential Dot Configuration (DDC), is introduced to reduce energy consumption and mechanical wear and tear during Braille transitions. The review further highlights underexplored aspects such as tactile hardware ergonomics, software-hardware co-design, and adaptive frameworks for evolving inclusive technology. By consolidating insights across control systems, algorithms, and assistive ergonomics, this work showcases a comprehensive roadmap for future Braille technologies that are affordable, adaptive, and inclusive by design.
