Todays engineering research is highly motivated towards the nature inspired metaheuristic computational algorithm as they have the capability to give better results as compared to the conventional methods. Wireless Sensor Networks(WSNs) have become increasingly popular due to their extensive array of applications. Desing of energy efficient routing algorithms is an important issue in the designing of WSNs applications as the lifetime of the sensor node is based on the limited battery powered devices. Therefore to maximize the lifetime of sensor node a comprehensive survey of energy efficient routing algorithms based on natural science have been addressed in this paper. The paper will take the readers into the detailed survey of existing energy optimized routing algorithms considering the natural science (metaheuristic) as the base and considering parameters related to energy efficiency as the core objective. The final part of the paper discusses the limitations of various algorithms that has been addressed in this paper and suggestions to overcome them.
